PFAS: New Updates from the EU

On November 20th, ECHA provided an update on the PFAS restriction proposal, highlighting fluoropolymers – a subgroup of PFAS – as a key area of interest for stakeholders.

The consultation has offered valuable insights into the availability of alternatives for specific fluoropolymer applications, strategies to reduce their environmental impact, and the potential socioeconomic effects of restricting their production and use. ECHA noted that fluoropolymers are receiving “specific attention” from all participants in the opinion development process.

For the first time, authorities are considering refining the scope of a potential general ban, with a focus on fluoropolymers. Proposed measures include “conditional restrictions,” allowing regulated production and use in Europe under defined conditions.

Although these initiatives show promise, they remain at an early stage and have yet to be finalized. Progress is expected to continue into 2025, with the RAC delivering its final opinion and SEAC preparing a draft opinion. A subsequent consultation will seek further socioeconomic input from stakeholders, helping to shape the committee’s final socio-economic assessment.
